THE USA WOMEN’S OLYMPIC SOCCER TEAM WON THE BRONZE MEDAL AT THE OLYMPIC GAMES IN TOKYO, JAPAN. 








FUN FACTS ABOUT SOCCER

  • The country of Brazil has won the most World Cups(5) with Italy having won (4).
  • The country of Brazil has par
    ticipated in every World Cup.

• In 1950, the football team from India withdrew from the competition because they weren’t allowed to play the game barefoot.

  • During the World Cup 2010, a new faster ball , called the Jabulani (Zulu for “to celebrate”) was used.

It is only in the USA (and some say, Canada, too) that the game is called “soccer”. The rest of the world calls the sport, “football.”

  • Some football players can kick the balls at a speed of 80 mph! A free kick by Khodadod Kia was measured at about 132 mph!
  • Recently, a 450-year-old football, made from a pig’s bladder and pieces of leather was found behind a panel in the Queen’s bedroom at Stirling Castle.
  • The football field is called the pitch.
  • During the Middle Ages, pig bladders were inflated and used as “balls”!
  • The Bicycle Kick was first done successfully by Ramon Unzaga, Chile, in 1914. The move involves throwing your body into the air, moving the legs in a scissor motion, and kicking the ball backwards over the head.

  • In 2003, Martinho Eduardo Orige, of Brazil broke a world record for juggling a soccer ball non-stop for 19 hours and 30 minutes.
