Imagine spending 31 days underneath the ocean! Using the News in the Classroom

Using the news in your classroom: Bell Ringer Activity

Imagine spending 31 days underwater in an underwater habitat the size of a bus. That's what oceanographer,Fabian Cousteau,(yes, his grandpa was Jacques Cousteau) has just completed off the coast of Key Largo. Located about  63 ft.below the surface of the water, Cousteau spent the time aboard the underwater lab called Aquarius, as part of a study of underwater living. Fabian Cousteau broke his famous grandfather's record of 30 days set fifty years ago. The lab had some of the comforts of home including, six bunks, a kitchen, air conditioning AND Wifi so that Cousteau could chat with kids around the world about his adventure. He had some visitors during the underwater stay including several who came to interview Cousteau. In addition to studying underwater living, Cousteau studied coral reefs, fish life and climate change. Cousteau said he spent much of the time looking out the window and loving the view!

Extension Activities:
If you were Fabian Cousteau, what 4 items would you have taken with you to the underwater lab?

What would you have missed the most being in the Aquarius for 31 days?

Pretend you are Fabian Cousteau and write a diary entry of something you saw outside your window while on board the Aquarius
